April Coffee Roasters

Why it is renowned

Sprudge names April with La Cabra, Prolog and Coffee Collective among the Copenhagen roasters that have become synonymous with the Scandinavian style of coffee.¹ Its founder Patrik Rolf took silver at the 2019 World Brewers Cup in Boston, brewing on a prototype of his own April Brewer, which he then brought out through Kickstarter.² April lists cafés in Vienna and in Uccle, Belgium, among the places that serve its coffee.³

The story

Patrik Rolf Karlsson, from Gothenburg, learned to roast at da Matteo and ran the roastery at Five Elephant in Berlin before starting April in Copenhagen in 2016.⁴ He first roasted on a Loring at The Factory Roast Lab on Refshalevej, and the colours of the first bags were taken from four houses in Nyhavn.⁴ April trades directly with the farmers it buys from, with some exceptions, and returns to the same farms year after year.⁵ Beside the roastery it has made the April Brewer, a hand grinder, a book and a podcast, and it runs the April Brewers Cup.⁶²
