Why it is renowned
Biomega bicycles are in the design collections of MoMA and SFMOMA, Die Neue Sammlung in Munich, the French CNAP and Design Museum Denmark.1 The brand is known for commissioning international designers from outside the bicycle industry, including Marc Newson, Ross Lovegrove, Karim Rashid and Bjarke Ingels, and it made bicycles with Puma under the name Urban Mobility.1
The story
Jens Martin Skibsted and Elias Grove Nielsen, who had studied together, founded Biomega in 1998.1 Marc Newson's MN bicycle, with a frame of superplastic-formed aluminium, and Skibsted's shaft-drive CPH came out in 2000; the AMS followed in 2002 and Ross Lovegrove's LDN in 2010.1 The company that held the licence went bankrupt in 2022, and in 2024 Skibsted bought the brand back and launched the BER electric bike.1
