Why it is renowned

Wallpaper* reviewed the OKO at its launch in 2015, riding it through Copenhagen and noting its 18.6 kg weight and the battery hidden inside the frame.1 It was recognised by the Good Design Awards and won an Iconic Award in 2016, was a finalist for the Danish Design Award, and was nominated for the Design Museum London's Beazley Design of the Year and Fast Company's Innovation by Design.2

The story

Biomega revealed the OKO in 2015 as its first electric bike.3 It was designed by KiBiSi, the Copenhagen industrial design company founded by Lars Larsen, Bjarke Ingels and Biomega's Jens Martin Skibsted, and was the most expensive project Biomega had developed until then.1 The frame was carbon fibre, with the battery housed inside it; the electric drive gave 250 W at the front wheel, and the rear hub had either a two-speed automatic or an eight-speed Shimano Alfine gear, with Shimano hydraulic brakes.1 A low-step version, the OKO e-low, followed in 2019.3 Biomega no longer made it; its range came down to the BER e-bike.4
