Nihola

Why it is renowned

In 2005 the Dutch cyclists' union Fietsersbond tested ten cargo bikes and named the Nihola Family the best three-wheeler: the only one whose box is fixed to the rear frame, with the wheels steering on their own like a car's, and the fastest and easiest to steer in the ride test.¹ Nihola has dealers in most European countries, Canada and the United States.² It is also one of the cargo bikes Copenhagen is known for.³

The story

The mechanical engineer Niels Holme Larsen started Nihola in 1998, after a Politiken critic wrote that cargo bikes would only rival cars once they could carry two children and the shopping in a light, stable bike.² He made the first 100 himself in a backyard in Vesterbro, Copenhagen.² In 2011 Nihola built 1,600 postal bikes for Post Danmark.² Frames are still made and powder-coated, and every bike built by hand, in its own factory 50 kilometres west of Copenhagen, and Larsen still owns the company.²
