Why it is renowned
The Christiania bike is one of the cargo bikes Copenhagen is known for, and it is sold in the United States under the name Boxcycles.1 It has become a type in its own right: a cargo tricycle with a gently sloping box in front, used to carry both goods and people.2
The story
Production began in 1984 at Christiania Smedie, the smithy in the Freetown of Christiania, after Lars Engstrøm built the first one for his wife.2 The box is water-resistant plywood on a frame of square galvanised steel tubing, with disc brakes on the front wheels.2 The bikes are now produced on Bornholm and assembled in Christiania, and Engstrøm still owns the company.2
