Why it is renowned

Vogue Scandinavia names Bagsværd Lakrids with Lakrids by Bülow as the premium Danish licorice to seek out, for its award-winning licorice caramels.1 At The Liquorice Taste Award, the unofficial Danish licorice championship, it won silver in 2018, bronze in 2019 and, from a unanimous jury in Tivoli, gold in 2020.2 Its licorice is made for Denmark and for buyers abroad.2

The story

It began at Christmas 2014, when Søren Beier, a chemical engineer, boiled licorice at home with his family and sent it to friends in envelopes.2 Demand grew, and in January 2015 he founded the company with Morten Kornbech Larsen, a fellow chemical engineer from the Technical University of Denmark.2

Everything is made in a small factory on Bagsværd Hovedgade, with a shop and packing room, where visitors can walk in from the street and watch the licorice being made.2 The flavours include salt, salmiak, sweet, chili, ginger, raspberry and mint, the last made with fresh mint leaves, sold as slabs and sticks.32
