Why it is renowned

Lakrids by Bülow took Danish licorice into the gourmet trade, and Vogue Scandinavia credits it with putting Nordic licorice on the world map.¹ CBS Sunday Morning and Business Insider have reported on it, and more than half its turnover comes from exports.² In 2025 it was sold to the international investment firm IDG Capital, to grow further abroad.³²

The story

Johan Bülow opened his first shop in Svaneke on Bornholm on 7 July 2007 and cooked the licorice on the premises; the first batch sold out within two hours.⁴ In 2008 he moved production to a factory in Taastrup, where licorice No. 1 to No. 4 were made, and in 2009 came the first chocolate-coated licorice, A – The Original: a sweet licorice core in milk chocolate, rolled in licorice powder.⁴ Since 2013 the licorice has been made at Avedøre Holme in Hvidovre, south of Copenhagen.³ The company traded as Lakrids by Johan Bülow until 2019, when it shortened the name to Lakrids by Bülow.³
