Anthon Berg

Why it is renowned

Anthon Berg is best known for its marzipan bread, a bar of marzipan coated in chocolate, and for chocolate-covered marzipan cakes filled with fruit in wine or spirits, such as plum in Madeira.¹ It was named purveyor to the Royal Danish Court in 1957.¹ The brand belongs to the Danish group Toms and is sold well beyond Denmark.²

The story

Anthon Berg (1829–1916) kept a grocer's shop on Gammel Strand in Copenhagen. In 1884 he bought a confectionery business, and with his son Gustav as assistant its confectioner began making filled dessert chocolates.¹ Berg handed small marzipan-filled chocolates to customers waiting in line; in 1898 the marzipan bread went into production as a product of its own.¹

Gustav Berg took over in 1901 and grew the business into a factory with about 200 staff. Toms bought the company in 1954,³ when it stood in Teglværksgade on Østerbro, and in 1962 all production moved to the Toms plant in Ballerup, designed by Arne Jacobsen.¹
