Why it is renowned
Odense Marcipan is one of the largest marzipan makers in the world, and its products are sold in about 25 countries, among them Japan, Germany, Dubai and the United States.12 Around 60 percent of what it makes is exported, and it has been purveyor to the Royal Danish Court since 1961.3 Bakers and confectioners abroad use its marzipan: in Japan in Danish pastry, in the United States in apple pie.2
The story
Lauritz Thobo-Carlsen founded the company in 1909, in a factory in Dronningensgade in Odense.31 The Norwegian group Orkla bought it in 1991, and after Orkla bought the Swedish marzipan maker KÅKÅ in 1999 it gathered all its marzipan production in Odense.3 Besides marzipan the company makes nougat, chocolate and nut products; its work with nuts led to KiMs salted peanuts in 1963.3
