Why it is renowned
The Norwegian Cargobike Magazine profiled a rider in Bergen who bought an XYZ Cargo straight from the maker and assembled it at the freight terminal; the bikes have an importer in Norway, Oslo Transportsykkel.1 Beyond its studios in Copenhagen and Hamburg, sub-producers build the bikes in the UK and the USA.2
The story
XYZ Cargo grew out of N55, the Copenhagen art collective started by Ion Sørvin, whose work sits between art, design and urban living.12 Sørvin began the project in 2010 with Till Wolfer, who opened a second studio in Hamburg in 2012.2 The frames are space frames of square aluminium tubes joined with bolts and without a single weld, and the cargo deck is a sheet of unbreakable clear polycarbonate.1 The system is modular: buyers can take a finished bike or build their own at one of the workshops the makers run.2
