Why it is renowned
Stauning has won international recognition for its whisky: the prize for the best European rye under seven years and the best European single malt at the Whisky Magazine awards, and 94 points in Jim Murray's "Whisky Bible", where its Peated 1st Edition took a Liquid Gold Award.1 Its rye whisky also took a Platinum Medal at the International Review of Spirits.1
The story
Stauning was founded in 2005 by nine Danish whisky enthusiasts near the village of Stauning, south of Skjern in West Jutland, and is the oldest whisky distillery in Denmark.1 Every step is done by hand: the grain is bought locally and floor-malted, and for the smoky whiskies it is dried over burning peat.1 After a chance tasting with the whisky writer Jim Murray in 2006, the founders moved to a farm south of the village and restarted production there in 2009.1
