Why it is renowned
Under its first name, Young Rye, it was named Best European Rye under seven years at the World Whiskies Awards in 2014.1 A Young Rye bottling of March 2016 was named Best Denmark Rye at the World Whiskies Awards 2017.2 Stauning lists gold medals for it from the International Wine & Spirits Competition, with 96 points, and the Beverage Testing Institute, with 93 points.3 Noma in Copenhagen makes its Whisky Vinegar, Noma Projects 005, from Stauning Rye.3
The story
Stauning Rye was the distillery's first official release.3 As Young Rye it was one of Stauning's three main whiskies, beside Traditional and Peated; whisky made on malted rye is rare.1 It is made only from local rye and barley, malted on the floor at the distillery.3 The spirit is distilled twice in small copper pot stills heated by direct flame and matured for three to four years in new American white oak.3 It is bottled unfiltered at 48 per cent in 70 cl bottles.3
