Why it is renowned
Louis Poulsen makes the PH lamps of Poul Henningsen, whose many-shaded lamp won a gold medal when it was first shown at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris.1 The company sells through subsidiaries, distribution offices and agents around the world; its main markets are Scandinavia, the rest of Europe, Japan and the United States.2
The story
Louis Poulsen founded the company in Copenhagen in 1874, and it is still based there, at Gammel Strand 28.2 Its designers have included Poul Henningsen and Arne Jacobsen.2 Henningsen built his lamps from several concentric shades so that the bulb is hidden and only reflected light leaves the lamp, without glare.1
