Why it is renowned

Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ lamps in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the building and interior he made for Scandinavian Airlines, which opened on 1 July 1960.¹² His furniture and lighting for the hotel became design classics that are held in museums around the world.² Louis Poulsen, which makes the AJ lamps, sells through subsidiaries, offices and agents worldwide, its main markets Scandinavia, the rest of Europe, Japan and the United States.³

The story

Jacobsen designed the whole of the SAS Royal Hotel, from the façade to the stainless-steel cutlery, the Egg and Swan chairs and the lamps.²¹ The AJ family, drawn in 1957, had a floor lamp, table lamps and a wall lamp; each shade is cut at an angle and tilts to send the light downward, and the floor and table lamps stand on a base with an open ring.¹ All were in place around the hotel after it opened in 1960.¹² Louis Poulsen makes them.¹
