Why it is renowned

For many years the piece was sold only to kindergartens and schools in Scandinavia; after its debut at the Spielwarenmesse toy fair in Nuremberg in 2012 it went on sale in the United States the same summer.1 Its Tubes became best-sellers there, and sets built on the same shape have won Oppenheim and ASTRA Best Toys for Kids awards.1 It is sold in more than 40 countries.2

The story

The piece goes back to Holbæk in the 1980s.2 It is one shape, like two plus signs joined,1 repeated to build flat designs or in three dimensions.2 It measures 20 by 12 millimetres and is meant for children from five; BIG and KÆMPE are the same shape, larger.2 The pieces are moulded from LDPE, a tough and flexible plastic, in the company's own wind-powered factory in Holbæk.2 The range sold under the name today includes colour mixes, single colours and Learn to Build sets.3
