Why it is renowned

ESSE won its first Michelin star in the 2026 edition of the Michelin Guide.1 It is one of 42 restaurants in Denmark with a star in the 2026 guide, which covers Denmark together with Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in one Nordic edition.1

The story

ESSE takes its name from a word meaning "to be" or "to exist", and sits in a warehouse from 1895 in Nordhavn, restored with its raw walls and vaulted wooden ceilings.2 The kitchen starts from regenerative organic farming and lets the seasons set the menu; most produce is Danish, with some seafood from Norway.2 The wine list favours growers who farm for biodiversity.2
