Why it is renowned
The MICHELIN Guide added Alsik Hotel & Spa to its hotel selection for Denmark, marked as new.12 It describes the tower as the centrepiece of Frank Gehry's plan for Sønderborg's old industrial harbour, and notes that its restaurant Syttende holds a Michelin star.2
The story
The masterplan for Sønderborg's harbour front was drawn up by the Canadian architect Frank Gehry, and Alsik, opened in early summer 2019, is part of it.3 Henning Larsen Architects designed the building.3 It is 70 metres tall with 19 floors and 24,800 square metres, the largest hotel in the Danish-German border region.3 The Bitten & Mads Clausen Foundation, owner of Danfoss, built it with PFA Pension; the first sod was turned on 13 November 2015 and the hotel opened on 6 May 2019.4 It ran under the Steigenberger brand until 1 November 2025, when it became independent and took the name Alsik Hotel & Spa.4 The 190 rooms and suites measure from 25 to 103 square metres, with floor-to-ceiling windows over Alssund, the harbour and the town.5 The spa spreads over four floors.6 The name and logo come from the alsike clover.3
