Why it is renowned

The MICHELIN Guide added Hotel Arnkilhus to its hotel selection for Denmark, marked as new.12 It notes the full renovation of 2024 and 2025, the rooms named after plants, and the private terraces of the ground-floor rooms.2

The story

Arnkilhus is an old town hotel on Arnkilgade in Sønderborg.3 In 2024 it was renovated from end to end, and it opened again as the new Hotel Arnkilhus in May 2025.3 It has 12 rooms, each furnished differently, with wallpapers and murals and shared lounges and terraces.3 Most rooms carry plant names, among them Jungle, Valmue (poppy), Botanik and Åkande (water lily), and most of those on the ground floor open onto their own terraces facing the gardens.4 A small permanent staff runs the house, and the same family runs Als Kloster, a farm hotel in the countryside of Als.3 The harbour front, the harbour bath and the pedestrian street are a short walk away.5
