Why it is renowned
In 2022 Opinionated About Dining placed Lille Bakery third on its list of the top cheap eats in Europe, behind Østerberg Ice Cream in Copenhagen and Jacques Genin in Paris and ahead of Hart Bageri and JUNO the bakery.1 Condé Nast Traveler names it among the best bakeries in Copenhagen: a converted warehouse on Refshaleøen, a little out of the centre, where the focaccia slice is the thing to order and quiches and focaccia reach the counter just before lunch.2 The city's tourist board lists it among Copenhagen's favourite bakeries, with Berliners, sourdough bread and cinnamon rolls.3
The story
Lille opened in the summer of 2018 as a small bakery and eatery on Refshaleøen, the old industrial area across the harbour. Its oven was paid for by a Kickstarter campaign.43 The bakery works only with local farmers, millers and producers, many of them small-scale farmers on Zealand, and cooks and bakes with what is in season.45
The menu changes every day. The loaves are all sourdough, made from Danish grains and seeds and baked each morning, and the counter also holds buns, Berliners, sausage rolls and cakes, and it serves breakfast and a lunch menu that changes every week.6
