Why it is renowned

Its collections have been shown and sold at trade fairs abroad since 2001. In 2007 it opened showrooms in Stockholm and Los Angeles and its first shop outside Denmark, in Oslo, and it is sold by more than 400 retailers around the world.¹ Vogue covered its Copenhagen fall 2015 collection.² It has its own store on Münzstraße in Berlin Mitte.³

The story

Mads Nørgaard, born in 1961, is the third generation of a family of Copenhagen retailers. His grandfather Matthes Mathias opened a shop on Strøget in 1944; his father Jørgen bought it in 1959 and, with Ellen Nørgaard, sold the new fashion from London and Paris beside their own designs.⁴

Mads opened his own shop in 1986, at first with menswear and a small collection of his own, and soon added womenswear.⁴ The first show was at Copenhagen Fashion Week in August 2005, in Den Grå Hal in Christiania.¹ In 2011 he bought his father's shop, and the house now has stores in Copenhagen, Aarhus and Berlin.⁴⁵

The striped #101 T-shirt was designed by Jørgen Nørgaard in 1967.³
