Why it is renowned
Reporting from Copenhagen Fashion Week in 2014, The Guardian counted DAY Birger et Mikkelsen among Denmark's leading designers, with Mads Nørgaard and Bruuns Bazaar.1 By 2013 the company sold its collections in 25 countries through more than a thousand outlets, among them department stores abroad, and had an office in London.2
The story
Keld Mikkelsen and Malene Birger founded the house in Copenhagen in 1997; Birger left in 2002.2 Its head office is on Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen.2
The collections blend ethnic references with Scandinavian design, in a main line and the second line 2nd Day.2 In 2006 Mikkelsen sold half the company to the Icelandic Baugur Group; after Baugur went bankrupt in 2009 he bought the shares back in 2010.2
