Why it is renowned
Bøg, then sold as Thy Whisky No. 9 Bøg Single Malt, was named European Whisky of the Year in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2020.1
The story
Bøg, Danish for beech, takes its name from the beech smoke that flavours it, used in the manner of the old Danish smokehouses in place of peat.2 It is made from organic barley grown in the fields around the distillery on the Gyrup farm in Thy.2 The barley is malted and smoked over beech wood in the distillery's drum maltings, distilled once and aged in sherry casks, most of them oloroso.2 The 2026 release uses Odyssey barley from the harvests of 2019 to 2021, 97.5 per cent beech-smoked malt and 2.5 per cent pale malt, and runs to 3,400 bottles of 70 cl at 50 per cent.2
