Why it is renowned

Formakami is Jaime Hayon's reading of the Asian paper lantern, made with a Scandinavian plainness: a rounded, handmade paper body set off by black stained oak.12 &Tradition launched it at Maison et Objet in Paris in 2015 as three pendant lamps, beside Hayon's Palette tables and Luca Nichetto's Cloud sofas.2 designboom tied it to the lantern's place in Asian cultures, hung for celebrations and as a sign of hope and prosperity.2

The story

Jaime Hayon, a Spanish artist and designer, set up his own studio in Valencia in 2000.1 He designed the Formakami lamps for &Tradition in 2015, in handmade rice paper.12

Each shade is a handmade paper lantern fitted with bent oak veneer.1 The family now holds the pendants JH3, JH4 and JH5, a limited edition of the JH5 and the JH18 table lamp; the JH3 is 45 cm across and 65 cm high.1 The lamps are made for &Tradition in China by Nine United China.1
