Why it is renowned
Cloud joins two ways of making a sofa: the defined frame of Danish upholstery and the soft cushions of Italian design.12 It was Luca Nichetto's first work for &Tradition and was launched at Maison et Objet in Paris in 2015, beside Jaime Hayon's Palette tables and Formakami lamps.2 designboom covered the launch and noted that the whole series is upholstered in Kvadrat textiles by Raf Simons.2
The story
Luca Nichetto is an Italian designer with offices in Italy and Sweden; he studied at IUAV, the Venice university of architecture, and set up his practice in Venice in 2006.1 He designed the Cloud series for &Tradition in 2015, and said the two had time to work through the fabric, colours and stitching in detail.12
The frame is of form-pressed, CNC-milled plywood on a base of steel and solid wood, with legs of solid steel rod; it is covered in foam, and the pillows are filled with foam and feathers.1 The series holds the LN1 and LN5 lounge chairs, the LN2 two-seater, the LN3.2 three-seater and the LN6 high-back two-seater; the LN2 is made for &Tradition in Poland.1
