Why it is renowned
When the Danish Architecture Center in Copenhagen gave Nanna Ditzel a solo exhibition, Breaking Free, in 2025, it named the Hanging Egg first among her designs: a chair that lets the body, held in rattan, float in space.1 Wallpaper* opened its account of the works on show with the chair.2
Recognition
The story
Through the 1950s Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel tried out new ways of sitting, and in 1959 they hung a curved, egg-shaped wicker shell from a chain, so that the sitter rocks gently inside it.3 The couple had set up their studio in 1946 and began to work in wicker in 1950.4 Today Sika-Design makes the chair in its ICONS range, working with the designers' descendants, and Yamakawa makes it as well.43 Sika-Design's chair is woven by hand from Indonesian rattan.4 It hangs either from a ceiling chain or from a stand.4
