Why it is renowned
Arne Jacobsen made the Egg for his SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, where its organic shape stood against the building's straight lines; Fritz Hansen makes it today.1 The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has held a black leather Egg by Fritz Hansen, designed in 1958, since 1968; its high back was meant to give a sitter privacy in the hotel's lobby.2 It was also the diary room chair in the first British series of Big Brother and stands at the gates of the renovated Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport.3
The story
Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, alongside the Swan chair.34 Fritz Hansen has made it since the late 1950s.5 It has a steel frame under a fabric or leather cover; two whole cowhides only just cover a leather Egg.3 A sofa version was also made, in a handful of copies.3
