Why it is renowned

With the Madame, Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel carried on their experiments in joining the seat and back of a chair, and let its shell and frame grow into one organic form.1 Its soft, shell-like outline gave the chair its name.2

The story

Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel opened their design studio in 1946 and took up wicker in 1950.2 They drew the Madame in 1951.21 Sika-Design makes it in its ICONS range of reissued designs, in agreement with the designers' descendants.2 Each chair is woven by hand from Indonesian rattan, and a seat and back cushion can be added.2
