Why it is renowned
Hallingdal was Kvadrat's first textile and remains one of its best sellers, known as much for wearing well as for its range of colours.12 It is found in homes, hospitals and airports and on trains, most visibly on the seats of the Danish State Railways (DSB).3 Nanna Ditzel's list of works counts it among her main designs.4
The story
Nanna Ditzel designed Hallingdal in 1965.2 It is woven from 70 per cent wool and 30 per cent viscose: the wool gives strength and give, the viscose depth of colour, and both are dyed before spinning, which brings out the texture of the cloth.2 Kvadrat later renewed its colour scale and sells it as Hallingdal 65.2 For the Milan furniture fair in 2012, seven curators guided by Patrizia Moroso and Giulio Ridolfo picked young designers from Europe, the United States and Asia, who made 32 new works with the fabric.15
