Why it is renowned

Montana is known abroad for the Montana System, shelving put together from modules in many colours.¹ It has flagship stores in Copenhagen, Bremen and Seoul and a showroom in Tokyo, and sells through retailers in other countries.²¹ Its chairs and tables include designs by Arne Jacobsen and Verner Panton, among them Panton's Panton One chair.³

The story

Peter J. Lassen, who had worked closely with Arne Jacobsen, Jørn Utzon, Piet Hein and Verner Panton, founded Montana in 1982 and designed the Montana System himself.³¹ The system has 36 basic modules in four depths, made of 12 mm MDF, and 43 colours worked out with the Danish colour designer Margrethe Odgaard.¹ Every module is designed, developed and made in Denmark, at the factory in Haarby on Funen, where more than 140 people work.¹³ The company is still owned by the family; Lassen's son Joakim became its managing director in 2015.¹³ In 2019 the Montana System received the EU Ecolabel.¹
