Why it is renowned
Nanna Ditzel designed the Trinidad Chair for Fredericia in 1993, taking its pattern from the fretwork of the gingerbread house facades she had seen in colonial architecture in Trinidad; the cut-outs in the plywood back cast a pattern of light and shadow around the chair.1 It is counted among Ditzel's main works.2
The story
The chair is a stacking chair with a frame of steel tube and a back of moulded plywood milled with the cut-outs, the seat and back fixed with rivets.1 Nanna Ditzel (1923–2005) trained as a carpenter and studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, graduating in 1946; she designed furniture for Fredericia and jewellery for Georg Jensen.2
