Hotel Skt. Annæ

Why it is renowned

Time Out names Hotel Skt. Annæ fourth among the best hotels in Copenhagen for 2026, for its rooms with panelling, sloped walls and beams, and for The Shrimp in its atrium courtyard.¹ It was one of 36 Danish hotels in the 2019 Nordic edition of the MICHELIN Guide.² Its guests come most often from Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Britain.²

The story

The hotel stands on Sankt Annæ Plads, the square between Nyhavn and Frederiksstaden, at No. 18.³ It was Hotel Neptun, with 133 rooms, when the Hildebrandt family bought it from Finansiel Stabilitet in 2013; the family already owned and ran Ascot Hotel by the City Hall Square.⁴ Claus Hildebrandt said then that it would stay an independent hotel outside the chains and be renovated over five years.⁴ The work took in the reception, the atrium courtyard, the kitchen, the restaurant and all 145 rooms, and added 20 rooms, a penthouse suite on the sixth floor and three apartments at Sankt Annæ Plads 14; it was finished in May 2019.² The colours of the rooms take their cue from the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi.⁵ Claus Hildebrandt owns the hotel today.⁶ The Shrimp, its restaurant in the atrium courtyard, is run by Torben Klitbo, founder of Cofoco.⁷ The hotel has held the Green Key eco-label since 2020, and its breakfast carries the silver Organic Cuisine Label.⁸
