Why it is renowned

Time Out names 71 Nyhavn Hotel sixth among the best hotels in Copenhagen for 2026, for its two converted warehouses on the canal, its exposed beams and its shuttered windows.¹ Its owner describes it as Copenhagen's first warehouse hotel, which drew foreign tourists as well as Danish travellers from the start.²

The story

The hotel fills two warehouses from the early nineteenth century, built to store spices brought from the Far East.³ The red one, Suhr's Pakhus, was built in 1805 by the merchant Ole Berendt Suhr and his partner Ludvigsen, and was listed in 1918.⁴ The architects Flemming Hertz and O. Ramsgaard Thomsen converted it into a hotel.⁴ Alf Arp-Hansen, a master builder who had founded Arp-Hansen Hotel Group in 1960 with the purchase of Gjentofte Kro, opened it in 1971.² In 2000 the hotel took in the yellow warehouse behind it, Puggaard's Pakhus, from about 1850.⁴ Both warehouses have since been refurbished, the red first, then the yellow.² The rooms keep the old beams of Pomeranian pine, and many look out over the harbour.³ There are 130 rooms and suites across the Red Warehouse and the Yellow Warehouse, and breakfast is served in the warehouse cellar.⁵⁶ Alf Arp-Hansen's sons Henning and Birger took full ownership of the group in 1998; it is the largest hotel company in Copenhagen, with more than 5,000 rooms there and in Aarhus.²⁷
