Why it is renowned

The MICHELIN Guide lists Hotel Kong Arthur among its Copenhagen hotels: a building of 1882 in lakeside Nansensgade, between the city centre and Nørrebro, with 214 rooms, a spa and a fitness centre.1 Ray Charles, Oscar Peterson, Joe Zawinul and Herbie Hancock have stayed here, and Oscar Peterson came back again and again.2

The story

The building at Nørre Søgade 11 went up in 1882 as a home for apprentices, and from the street it still looks much as it did, apart from the hotel sign over the door.2 In 1982 it was sold to Einer Honoré, who handed it to his daughter and son-in-law, Bergliot and Hans Brøchner-Mortensen, who gave up plans as a nurse and a carpenter to run the hotel.3 The hotel grew from 50 to 107 rooms in 1989, and in 1997 the family bought Ibsens Hotel on the corner of Vendersgade and Nansensgade.3 When Jazzhus Montmartre needed beds for touring musicians, the founders fitted out a whole floor for them, and the hotel still invites the musicians of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival to jam sessions every year.2 In 2013 the next generation divided the business, and Kirsten Brøchner-Mortensen took Hotel Kong Arthur and Ibsens Hotel under the new name Arthur Hotels.3 Arthur Hotels today also holds three restaurants, a run of courtyard gardens, a spa and meeting rooms by Nørreport, and Kirsten Brøchner runs it as owner and director.4
