Why it is renowned
Foreign travel writers send design lovers here. The Monocle Travel Guide to Copenhagen calls the hotel a place to stay in a design museum.1 The New York Times travel magazine picked its Verner Panton corner suite in 2018 among the Copenhagen hotel rooms worth travelling for, and The Telegraph lists it among the city's design hotels.23 Wallpaper* covered the opening of its Jens Risom room in 2017, and Le Monde's M magazine wrote about its rooms in 2015.45
The story
Hotel Alexandra dates from 1910 and stands on H. C. Andersens Boulevard, by the City Hall Square and Strøget.67 The collection began with one piece by Kaare Klint and grew, over twenty years, into Danish furniture, textiles and wallpapers of the 1950s to the 1970s for all 61 rooms.7 Jeppe Mühlhausen, the general manager, has furnished the rooms since 2001 and trains the staff in the history of the furniture.1 Suites are given to single designers, among them Hans J. Wegner, Finn Juhl, Arne Jacobsen and Nanna Ditzel; in the Collector's Suite the furniture changes every six months and is for sale.1 The Jens Risom room, made with the design company Form Portfolios, holds his U-151 sofa and the 654 chair he designed for Knoll in 1942.4
