Why it is renowned
The MICHELIN Guide lists Absalon Hotel among its Copenhagen hotels: a family-run hotel in a classic corner building in Vesterbro, with 161 rooms.1 The guide notes its colour: white oak floors, striped curtains, patterned wallpapers and rooms arranged by colour theme, a break from the spare lines most visitors expect of Danish design.1
The story
Absalon Hotel opened in 1938 with 11 rooms; two generations later it has 161 rooms and suites.2 It was founded by Vilhelm Johannes Andersen and his wife Erna as a mission hotel, and their sons Eric and Mogens Nedergaard ran it for many years after them.3 Karen Nedergaard, a granddaughter of the founders, runs it today, and it belongs to Absalon Fonden, a family foundation that also owns Andersen Boutique Hotel on the same street.3 The rooms were furnished by Designers Guild, in two colourways, Berry in purple and Ocean in blue.4 The present look dates from a renovation this century.1 There is a small cocktail bar and a Scandinavian breakfast buffet, but no full restaurant.1
