Why it is renowned

In 2016 the World Luxury Hotel Awards named Skodsborg the best wellness spa in Europe.¹ The sanatorium drew guests from abroad from its early years: John Harvey Kellogg, whose Battle Creek Sanitarium was its model, visited in 1926, and in 1910 it hosted the eighth International Socialist Congress, attended by Rosa Luxemburg.¹

The story

The physician Carl Ottosen had worked for John Harvey Kellogg at Battle Creek before he founded Skodsborg Badesanatorium with the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1898.²¹ He had bought two buildings that had served King Frederick VII and Countess Danner as a summer retreat; a new main building followed in 1907, when Villa Rex, designed by Johan Henrik Nebelong in 1858, was added.¹ The vegetarian diet earned the place the nickname Persilleslottet, the Parsley Palace.¹ The Adventist Church sold it in 1992 to the Augustinus group, which has owned the hotel outright since.³¹ Today it has a spa, a gym, two restaurants and a view over the Øresund.²
