Why it is renowned
In the Michelin Guide 2026 the hotel's Restaurant Okê received the first Michelin star awarded in Skagen.1 Ruths Hotel is also described in English-language guidebooks such as Frommer's Scandinavia and Lonely Planet Denmark.2
The story
Hans Christian Ruth, warden of the life-saving station at Gammel Skagen, and his wife Emma opened the boarding house Vesterhus for summer guests in 1904; it later took the name Ruths Hotel.3 In 1909 Ruth took part in the rescue of the crew of the Norwegian ship Speed; the only survivor, Johan Olaf Dahler, married Ruth's daughter Dagmar in 1912, and the couple ran the hotels in Gammel Skagen for more than sixty years.32 After Dagmar Dahler's death in 1974 the hotels were divided; Jørgen Philip-Sørensen later brought Ruths Hotel and the neighbouring Strandhotel together again.3 The house was extended in stages between 1909 and 1928, among them rooms and a studio built to draw painters.2
