Why it is renowned

In January 2019 the Norwegian women's magazine KK profiled Bitte Kai Rand as one of Scandinavia's foremost fashion designers with a label of her own.1 The house names thirteen countries besides Denmark where it is sold, among them Australia, the United States, Britain and Germany, and runs its own shops in Oslo, Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm.23

The story

The house was founded in Copenhagen in 1981 by the designer Bitte Kai Rand, a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, who bought the knitwear firm Steen’s Hjemmestrikkerier.2 Her husband Michael Rand joined in 1983, and over four decades the two built the label around knitwear, prints and a layered way of dressing.2 Since April 2025 it has been part of the department store Magasin du Nord.2
