Why it is renowned

Sprudge calls Kieni the roaster's signature single origin.1 The Coffee Collective barista Mikaela Wallgren placed second at the World Brewers Cup in Dublin with Kieni from the normal production roast, the only coffee in the final that was not a natural, and Barista Hustle chose it as its subscription coffee for October 2016.2

The story

Coffee Collective first bought from Kieni in 2010 and has bought from the cooperative every year since.3 Around 1,000 members deliver their cherries to the Kieni factory in Nyeri, which has been among the highest-paying factories in Kenya throughout those years.3 The coffee is pulped, sorted, fermented overnight, washed and dried on raised beds for twelve to eighteen days.3 The varieties are SL28, SL34, Batian and Ruiru 11, grown at 1,600 to 1,800 metres, and the roaster publishes the price it paid per kilo.4 It is roasted in Copenhagen on a Loring Kestrel, kept light to bring out its acidity.2
