Ege Carpets

Why it is renowned

Ege Carpets sold well outside Denmark from the 1970s, when it set up its first subsidiaries in Norway and Sweden; Germany, England and France followed in the 1980s.¹ It now has showrooms in London, Paris, New York, Dubai, Oslo, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Munich and Bielefeld as well as in Copenhagen and Herning.² It has made collections with Tom Dixon and Christian Lacroix, and Snøhetta designed its MATTER collection.¹³ In 2024 the American design site Design Milk covered its SHE rugs by Laura Bilde and Linnea Blæhr.⁴

The story

Mads Eg Damgaard founded Ege Carpets in Herning in 1938, starting with two looms in a small building.¹ In 1953 it stopped making other textiles to make only carpets and bought three Axminster looms.¹ A 25,000 m² tufting factory followed in Herning in the early 1970s, and the company was listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange in 1985.¹ In 1996 it became the first carpet maker to receive the ISO 14001 environmental certificate.¹ Carpet tiles came in the late 1990s, and in 2005 it patented Ecotrust, its felt backing for tiles.¹ Mads Eg Damgaard died in 1999, aged 85.¹

Yarn design, dyeing, tufting and finishing all take place in its own plants in Denmark.⁵
