Why it is renowned

Full Lace is the Blue Fluted service with a pierced border: every hole in its lace border is made by hand and then painted with blue brushstrokes.1 The Denver Art Museum holds a Full Lace plate made in 1785–1790 and showed it in its exhibition Blue and White: A Ceramic Journey in 2011 and 2012.2 It belongs to the Blue Fluted (Musselmalet) family whose history Kalundborg Museum showed in an exhibition in 2019.3

The story

The pattern was first made in 1775 and revised in 1885 by Arnold Krog, the factory's artistic director.1 Krog admired a full lace dessert plate from the factory's early days and made Full Lace a complete dinner service; he also added the less intricate Blue Fluted Half Lace.4 Some plates carry a double lace border, its piercings set in a star-shaped pattern encircled by fish-scale decoration.5 On the teapot the lace border frames the lid, grotesque faces support the handle and spout, and a snail shell sits on top of the lid.6
