Why it is renowned
Le Klint credits the Model 172 with its international breakthrough and the growth of its exports.1 Christiansen's Sinus line, made by combining sine waves that form a round shade when folded, was a success for Le Klint.2
The story
Poul Christiansen drew the Model 172 in 1971.3 Before him, Le Klint shades were pleated and folded in straight lines across the pleats.3 He found that folding along mathematical curves gave the shade a sculptural form, and combined sine curves so that the folded sheet closes into a shade.3 The lamp belongs to that SinusLine series.3 New sizes were added up to 2009.3 Each shade is folded by hand in Odense, in paper or in a white lampshade foil.3
