Why it is renowned

The Model 101 is known for its shade: one rectangular sheet folded into a closed, many-faceted ball, a feat of folding when it came out in 1944.1 Kaare Klint, the architect called the father of Danish Modern, drew it for the museum now called Designmuseum Danmark, and it has hung in the museum's public rooms since the 1940s.12 The Danish design press counts it among the house's classic pendants and the forerunner of its geometric lamps.3

The story

Kaare Klint worked through the 1930s on a round, closed pendant made of folds, and Le Klint launched it as the Model 101 in 1944.1 In Danish it is called Frugtlygten, the fruit lantern.3

The shade is folded by hand in Odense, in a white PVC foil.4 Its closed form hides the bulb, so it suits high rooms, where it is seen both from afar and up close.4 It hangs from Kaare Klint's original suspension, with a brass suspension as an option.4
