Why it is renowned
Kaare Klint refined the Safari Chair from the folding chairs an American couple had taken on an African safari, which were most likely based on the Indian Roorkhee chair used by the British military, and exhibited his design in 1933 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition.1 Klint (1888–1954), known as the father of modern Danish furniture design, worked in clean lines and fine materials, and the Safari Chair is among his notable works.2
The story
The folding chairs Klint started from had glueless joints, went together without tools and tightened at the joints when sat in; he simplified and refined that construction.1 Carl Hansen & Søn makes it as model KK47000, with a frame of ash, a seat and back of canvas and armrests of saddle leather.1
