Why it is renowned
In November 2009 the Vipp pedal bin entered the permanent architecture and design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.1 The Conran Shop took the bin for its London and Paris stores after 1992, and Vipp now runs guesthouses outside Denmark, the first at Lake Immeln in Sweden from 2014.1
The story
Holger Nielsen sold a car he had won in a lottery, bought a metal lathe and set up a metal workshop in Randers.1 In 1939 his wife Marie asked him for a waste bin for her hairdressing salon, and he made the first Vipp bin; by the 1950s it was common in Danish clinics and offices.1 His daughter Jette Egelund took over in 1992 and brought the bin into homes; her children Kasper and Sofie now run the company, which made its first modular kitchen and opened its first shop in Copenhagen in 2011.1
