Why it is renowned
Ib Kofod-Larsen's Penguin Chair of 1953 is one of the mid-century designs Audo has brought back to production, and Surface names Kofod-Larsen among the house's notable designers.12 It now comes as a dining chair with an upright profile sized for the table, a deep, low lounge chair and a rocking chair on wooden rockers.1
The story
Ib Kofod-Larsen designed the Penguin Chair in 1953.1 The lounge chair has a handcrafted solid oak frame with a seat and back of form-pressed veneer, curved to hold the body; the parts are polished and lacquered after assembly.3 It is made in natural or red-stained oak, all in wood or with an upholstered seat, and it is compact enough for small rooms.3 An upholstered version with padded seat and back was added later.1
