Why it is renowned
The American magazine Enjoy the Music reviewed the TD4.2 in July 2020, and its reviewer Tom Lyle called the pair the best speakers he had ever auditioned.1 The TD4.2 was the first speaker in the TD line with a true midrange-tweeter-midrange layout.2
The story
The TD4.2 is a three-way bass-reflex speaker. Its ribbon tweeter sits at the centre of the baffle, with 5-inch midrange and 6.5-inch bass drivers set symmetrically above and below it, all with Raidho's tantalum-diamond cones.21 The several small bass drivers are meant to reach as deep as larger woofers with a faster impulse response, and they let the front stay slim to reduce diffraction.2
The woofer is a developed version of the one in the earlier D4.1, with a reworked magnet system, edge-wound voice coils, copper rings and a softer spider, and the crossover was redesigned with a stepped slope so that the drivers meet softly and then part steeply.1 The crossover points are 400 Hz and 2.4 kHz, and the rear port is shaped for impulse response.2
