Why it is renowned
The British magazine Sound On Sound reviewed the UNIT-4 and called it a very impressive first monitor from AIAIAI, adding that it knew of nothing else for nearfield monitoring quite like it: compact, optionally battery-powered and wireless.1 The reviewer also took one apart and praised the neat engineering inside and the repairable build.1
The story
Each UNIT-4 has a 4-inch paper-cone woofer and a 1-inch silk-dome tweeter, driven by two 30-watt amplifiers, and is tuned for a flat response within 2 dB from 50 Hz to 20 kHz.2 A built-in battery gives 20 hours of play, and the speaker weighs 2.5 kg in a three-litre wedge-shaped case that tilts upward on a desk.21
It takes music over Bluetooth, through mini-jack and balanced jack inputs, or over AIAIAI's own W+ Link, which sends uncompressed 44.1 kHz, 16-bit audio from a small transmitter with 16 ms of latency.2 A ring of light around the woofer shows battery, volume and connection, and a perforated steel grille is held on by magnets.1 The case is made of post-consumer plastic and held with screws rather than glue, so the batteries and other parts can be replaced.21
