Why it is renowned
Michael Fremer reviewed the MP-P201 for the American magazine Stereophile in 2010 and found it better in most ways than the Boulder 2008, which he had called sonically superb. He described its bass as granitic and its soundstage as having an unprecedented solidity.1 It opened Vitus Audio's Masterpiece Series in 2009.2
The story
The MP-P201 was released in 2009, built on the earlier SP-101 phono stage with a new modular approach. One chassis holds the circuit and the other a large power supply with many stages of regulation, to keep the noise down.2 It has balanced and single-ended inputs that can each be set and named for a cartridge from the front panel.1
The Mk.II of 2014 had a redesigned power supply and a new loading system that let every load be chosen by remote control instead of by changing boards inside.2 The current Mk.III uses the discrete gain modules of the MP-L201 line stage, tuned for very low noise, and takes moving-magnet, moving-coil and mono cartridges.3 It comes in white, black or silver, with orange, champagne and grey among the special finishes.3
