Why it is renowned

The Sindre was a turntable whose acrylic platter and straight-line tracking tonearm both floated on air, fed by a separate air pump.1 Reviewing it for The Absolute Sound in 2010, Paul Seydor criticised parts of the design but called it one of the finest turntables he had ever used.2

The story

Johnnie Bergmann named the Sindre after Sindri, the dwarf of Norse mythology who forged Odin's gold ring and Thor's hammer.2 Launched in 2008, it was Bergmann Audio's first turntable, and it was sold only with its own tonearm.1 The plinth was four layers of high-density composite; the 4 kg acrylic platter sat on a 3.2 kg aluminium subplatter, centred by a steel spindle, and a belt-driven DC motor with its own power supply turned it at 33 or 45 rpm.3 The arm was made of hard aluminium alloy and carbon, and the turntable weighed 23 kg.3 It has since been dropped from the Bergmann range.4
